If you are one of the many Americans who are interested in entrepreneurship, there are a number of factors to consider when planning your pursuit. Whether you are selling baby supplies or electronics accessories, the world of self-employment and business ownership can be a lucrative and exciting endeavor. Here are some guidelines to help get you to started.

When it comes time to start your own business, start with your plan itself. Whether you are selling diapers or diamonds, a company's entire future depends on the plans it laid when it was established (and adjusted accordingly along the way). Start with an outline of your goal and then fill-in the details in a formal plan.

Once that has been accomplished, register the business name in the state or province in which it will operate. It is ideal to do this before formally incorporating the business, which can be costly. You will need to go through the red tape, pay your dues literally and figuratively, whether you are planning on making a new instantaneous water heater or are selling used cars. Registration will provide you with what's commonly called a Business Identification Number and Master Business License under which you can begin to operate.

You will also have to research any municipal, state/provincial or federal regulations pertaining to your field. Be sure to understand what business licenses you will need for your particular industry. The regulations for selling a designer wedding dress, for example, will be greatly different than the laws surrounding selling livestock.

Familiarize yourself with every local agency, trade organization or union that you think pertain to your business. Be sure to register with them and to establish yourself as a mainstream supplier in your field from the onset. Whether you are selling vinyl wall letters or vinyl siding, you should also be sure to start engaging in a relationship with an attorney and an accountant. Make sure that you are protected legally. It is very important to establish your business as it's own entity and to put some distance between your personal liabilities and those of your company.

Once you are technically a company and ready for business, it will be important to start marketing yourself and establishing your brand among your target market. To do so effectively and efficiently, you will now need to ensure that you have an iron-clad Marketing Plan. If you are planning on selling trendy iPhone cases, you will still need to try and draw people to them, no matter how trendy they are. In your Marketing Plan, you will have to consider and convey how you can cost-effectively gain exposure immediately and long term.

Be sure also not to overlook establishing yourself locally. In the Internet age, people commonly forget that (although it's advantageous to market yourself to the masses online) you still need to have a presence in local business directories, in community events and to even be listed in the Yellow Pages. Although we are in a global village, most people's business still comes from their own communities.
